Bridging Industries: Biochar and Carbon Removal Unite Monterey's Leaders

In the heart of Monterey County, a diverse group of community leaders gathered at ReGen Monterey to witness firsthand the innovative strides being made in biochar production, carbon removal, and waste management. This event showcased how biochar production and sustainable waste management practices are capturing the attention of various industry sectors.

The Power of Slow Pyrolysis

At the core of the tour was our slow pyrolysis process, a carbon-friendly method that transforms organic materials into biochar. This process not only diverts green waste from landfills but also creates a valuable product for soil enhancement and carbon sequestration. The attendees, ranging from CEOs of Venture Capital firms to representatives from Habitat for Humanity, were visibly intrigued by the potential of both this technology and resulting material to address multiple environmental challenges.

Sitos Group's forward-thinking approach repurposes ReGen Monterey's organic municipal wood waste, transforming it into biochar. The B3 unit installed at the site can process approximately 2,640 tons of organic materials per year, producing roughly 880 tons of high-quality biochar annually. This equates to about 7 tons of processed material and 2.3 tons of biochar daily.

What sets this project apart is its focus on creating biochar specifically for agricultural applications. The slow pyrolysis process allows for customization of the biochar to suit various soil types found throughout California's diverse agricultural landscape. This tailored approach ensures maximum benefit for local growers embracing regenerative agriculture practices.

Uniting Diverse Perspectives

The tour was part of the Leadership Monterey County, a 10-month initiative that builds awareness of local business and community concerns. The program, operated by Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce, and the Monterey County Business Council (MCBC), aims to foster stewardship and shape the county's future.

Mayo P. Ryan, AFM, CEO and Co-founder at Sitos Group, remarked on the experience:

Sitos Group's CEO, Mayo Ryan, sharing the benefits of biochar with the Leadership Monterey County group.

"It was an enriching experience to be surrounded by such intelligent and impressive people who all were bright-eyed in curiosity about what we are doing here at ReGen Monterey."

A Circular Economy in Action

Our pilot project at ReGen Monterey exemplifies the circular economy in action. Through strategic partnerships, the biochar's journey from production to application is optimized for environmental and agricultural benefit.

Immediately after production, the biochar is composted on-site by Keith Day Company. This step allows the biochar to "charge" for a minimum of two weeks before soil application, enhancing its effectiveness. The primary off-taker for this biochar is Monterey Pacific, LLC, a large-scale vineyard management company located in Soledad, CA, demonstrating biochar’s direct impact on local agriculture.

A Carbon-Friendly Future

The enthusiasm witnessed during the tour reflected a broader trend: the growing interest in carbon removal technologies and the potential to increase the transition to regenerative agriculture and more sustainable practices.

"There was no lack of enthusiasm and support for our project," Ryan added, "and with the unwavering backing of the Monterey community, we feel confident in overcoming any new hurdles that come our way."

This support from diverse sectors highlights the unifying potential of sustainable technologies. It demonstrates that carbon-friendly practices like biochar production can serve as a bridge, connecting different industries in a common goal of environmental stewardship.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to develop and refine our biochar production process at ReGen Monterey, the interest and support from our community serves as a powerful motivator. The questions and insights shared during the tour have reinforced our passion for this work and the transformative potential of biochar and regenerative agriculture practices. Building on this momentum, we're excited about the potential to scale our technology. Our current facility is just the beginning; we're actively exploring opportunities to expand our partnerships, increase biochar production, and enhance our CDR capabilities.

We at Sitos Group are committed to advancing these carbon-friendly technologies, fostering partnerships across industries, and contributing to a more regenerative future for Monterey County and beyond. As our recent tour demonstrated, when it comes to addressing climate change and promoting soil health, we're all in this together.
